Not Just your usual Pie House by Neo Daredevil

Before our caving adventure we were able to pass by this Place and it Immediately caught my attention. The menu is listed outside so you would have an idea on what they serve . The exterior really looked good. It's an old house well maintained with a touch of yellow paint at the exterior and a home like ambiance inside .

It was on our third day in Sagada when we had the chance to eat at this Lemon Pie House. It was a bit far from where we are staying so it's really an extra effort for us to go to this food Place. After cleaning up ourselves we decided to go down the road again and have "The Lemon Pie House Experience." Just when we got inside we saw the same people from the cave adventure so definitely Lemon Pie House is really a popular choice. There are two low tables at the right corner ( if you are facing the entrance door )and two on the other side . There's also a small counter just near the right corner low tables where the Pies are displayed and at the same time where the cashier /staff is located and it is where they also take orders. And also there's an extension area where there are 2 or more table with chairs and adequate lighting for each table.

Since it's already dinner time we decided to go for a heavy dinner meal. I ordered for a chicken pork adobo and two rice. The food were served fast and It Really tasted at its BEST - no joke.

1. the Vegetables tasted well , fresh ,well cooked and nice cut .
2. the chicken and pork were soft and cut in a more sophisticated smaller size.
3. not that oily but do have more flavor and balance taste.
4. served in a good presentation. ( plating )

The food was definitely affordable; it cost me around $3-4 meal + drinks, + around $2 for the lemon, egg(for take out) and blueberry pie which were really pleasing to the mouth. Customer service wise the food attendant/cashier was so funny and accommodating . A lively person that checked on us time to time while were waiting for our food. Plus there's a free Wifi connection so you can surf the net while waiting and I even saw a chess board for recreation. So what else are you waiting ? if you're in Sagada don't forget to drop by this place .

Homemade Treats Make Lemon Pie House a Favorite

The Sagada Lemon Pie House is a favorite stopover by famished backpackers looking for a hearty meal. Established three years ago by husband and wife Joseph and Katrina Daoas, the Sagada Lemon Pie House has been offering its Lemon and Egg Pies to the throngs of adventurers in Sagada. Joseph, who used to work abroad, thought of reconstructing his old sari-sari store into a cafe. He decided to make lemon pies, which his mother used to bake as a specialty of the house.

The lemon pies proved to be a hit and soon, neighbors and the whole community knew about his hearty treat. The bright yellow pie house stands out and is easy to spot. Visitors of nearby Lumiang Caves are greeted by the smell of the lemon pies fresh from the oven. The smell of the pies lingered and we had to cut our trip to the cave short as we hurried back uphill to finally find out for ourselves what the fuss is all about.

We went through the small door of the cafe and immediately ordered cups of hot coffee and slices of lemon pie. The place's cozy despite their mismatches furniture. The soft lightin warms the place up and visitors are left to decide whether you lounge and play board games, squatting on the mats or on the couches.

While waiting for my order, I chanced upon Mang Joseph who was very kind and accomodating. He said he never imagined the cafe and the pies to be such a hit. "We're glad because we are seeing our hard work and persistence paid off," he said.

The lemon pie combines a fruity flavor and a texture of soft tart and pudding. The crust is also soft and you will leave not a crumb of bread in the plate. Combined with native Arabica coffee, it is a welcome treat after an afternoon of walking in a cold Sagada weather. At P18 for a slice, I would've eaten a whole lot more if it were not for a heavy dinner I was looking forward to later that night.

There are some places in Sagada where one visit is just not enough and the Sagada Lemon Pie House is one of them.

Addicted to Sagada's Lemon Pie House

Have you ever experienced craving for something that you ended up dreaming about it? That's exactly what happened to me a few days ago.

A day before that, me and my buddy were reminiscing our Sagada Lemon Pie House experience and how we had a great time finishing a slice of lemon pie and egg pie while sipping mountain tea and lounging in a comfortable position that feels so much like home...

The flashback started with me and my friend walking our way to Sumaguing Cave and while on the way, we noticed this quaint looking house with a small sign board on the side that says Lemon Pie House and near the front door, a chalk board that listed their menu, right that very moment, our eyes lighted up matched with a big smile that says "DESSERTS". But since our group and our guide who went ahead to do the Cave Connection will be meeting us halfway at Sumaguing Cave in just an hour, we hurried up and decided to save the best for last. After that adrenalin pumping moment at Sumaguing Cave that was both a scary and liberating experience for me, wherein I slipped and let go of my hold of the rope and plunged into the deep freezing cold water, I know that sweet fix later that day at Lemon Pie House highlighted my Sagada experience.

At that moment, everything seems perfect, the right blend of the tartness and sweetness of the lemon pie, the relaxing effect of the mountain tea , the cozy ambiance, the unnerving experience I had early that day and the warm and nice people around summed up the meaning of AWESOME!

The Sagada Lemon Pie House was the perfect treat to capped our day of fun, adventure and unforgettable experience that only Sagada can bring, I even brought home one box of lemon pie. Needless to say, I'm addicted to Sagada and Lemon Pie House.

Several days before I set out on what I call McCandless Day, a day I annually share with the late Chris McCandless (we have the same birthday to be exact), I was slumped with work, but full of thoughts of lovely Sagada. It crossed my mind to do a bit of research on the web about my forthcoming trip. One of the things that came up which roused my curiosity was a page about Sagada Lemon Pie House. I was looking at the photos on the page and I thought to myself, “Sure looks cozy, I could already taste those sumptuous pies.”

Twelve hours, two bus rides and several stopovers later, I found myself in dreamy Sagada. The first three days were fleeting and, as soon as I arrived, I was to spend my last day’s worth of vacation before I go back to Manila and work. On my fourth and last day of stay in Sagada, I woke up early anticipating a day of shooting. Armed with my arsenal of cameras, film and tripod, I went around snapping photos like crazy only to finish at around 10am. I still had time to hang out before catching the last bus so I set off to visit the Lemon Pie House.

Upon seeing a yellow house with a sign that identified it as my destination, my heart skipped a beat. For some reason, I felt I was home. It was surreal. It was like seeing an old friend I haven’t seen for a long time. Staring at its facade, I immediately took photos. I slowly opened the door and the mellow voice of Tracy Chapman on the radio ushered me in. The place looked just how I imagined it to be. Mats were sprawled on the floor, with short-legged furniture on top. Pinecones and small potted plants adorned the window sill. Magazines littered the tabletops while a wooden Sungka board silently sat in the corner. I felt like a child coming home from school.

I ordered a slice of lemon pie coupled with a cup of lemon tea. I wanted to try their coffee, but I thought of getting a bit “lemony” that day. Between bites, I savored each moment of not being in front of a computer, of not catching trains through throngs of people, of being away from the daily grind. Every bite of that pie just felt so right. Cozying up at a corner of the café, memories of the past days came flooding in; the cool air against my face, the sight of lush green mountains, the deafening silence of the coming evening, the warmth of the townsfolk’s smiles.

As I watched the town whistling by through the window, I asked myself, should I stay for another day? I can stay in this place sipping lemon tea all day; trying out their biscuits, cakes and all kinds of pie. I can spend another day finishing a book, chatting with both locals and tourists, thinking about life or doing absolutely nothing at all. I looked at my watch and I only had an hour and a half left to pack my stuff. “Well, there’s work tomorrow,” I said to myself; I should be off. Lemon Pie House will always be here and I will surely be back. If one’s going to visit Sagada, Lemon Pie House should be in their itinerary. It’s not just a place for food, but a place for warm memories and much needed silence.

In the words of Chris “Alexander Supertramp” McCandless, “Happiness is real when shared”. Lemon Pie House surely has a lot to share in each slice of pie and cup of tea they serve. And I found another reason to visit Sagada again and again.

Our Feature in Trip na Trip

Now on its 12th season, Trip na Trip revisited Sagada, Mountain Province for the 2nd time around. Hosted by Ms. Katherine "Kat Kat" de Castro, Jason Gainza, Franzen Fajardo, Kian Kazemi and Uma Khouny, this local travel program has received numerous awards which includes Best Travel Show at the 2007 Star Awards for TV, and Best Travel Show Host at the 2008 Star Awards for TV. The clip posted above was taken from a two-part special and was originally aired on local Philippine TV on December 4 & 11, 2009.

On the first part of their Mountain Province episode, they've showed Sagada's hidden gem, the Sumaguing Cave, Echo Valley's hanging coffins, Rock Inn's orange picking, and the Sagada inns and souvenir shops. They also made a quick stop at the Bontoc Museum. Thanks to the very nice guides of the Sagada Genuine Guides Association (SAGGAS) that assisted all the staffs of Trip na Trip during their entire stay.

On the second part of their Mountain Province episode, it was even a more fun-filled, heart-pounding yet, full-flavored episode. Uma and Kian had a very intense and bumpy ride, during their whitewater rafting experience at the Chico River. Afterwhich, Kat and Kian went to Bomod-ok Falls, also known as the Big Falls of Sagada, together with John, their guide. Trip na Trip also went to visit the Sagada Pottery. Last part of this episode was alloted for the famous restaurants in Sagada like Dalikan Restaurant, Saint Jo Cafe, Salt and Pepper, and of course, The Sagada Lemon Pie House. They've talked about our pies, our interiors, our ambiance, and yes, our free Wi-Fi.

The Soul of Sagada Lives in a Pie

Located in the outskirts of the town of Sagada, there is a very peculiar cafe that's all painted yellow. I haven't seen this when i was in Sagada few years ago. It was new to me.

Ben and me decided to go to the first ever cafe/restaurant in Sagada after our grueling camping at the peak of Ampacao Mountain where we got stuck for 17 hours inside the tent because we were stuck in the middle of a storm. Arrrghhh.

We walked inside this cafe, and a small gray haired, toothless, happy and charming woman with sparkling eyes that hints sadness greeted us, in the name of Manang Katrina (Madame Katrina). Inside, the Lemon Pie House is so warm and cozy. It's just like stepping into your own house after all in a days work. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. But the specialty of the house is their homemade pies which Manang Katrina made herself and learned the craft decades ago to support her family. There are many specialties of pies here, like blueberry pie (which she gathers the wild blueberries from the pine forests in Sagada), the lemon pie - which is to die for, egg pie and a seasonal pie - it depends on which fruit thrive in the season.

The Lemon Pie House is constructed of hard pinewood. The smell inside is so inviting, it's refreshing to the mind and the soul. It's dark inside, but the laughter and smile of Manang Katrina brings light to the faces of the customers. There is also a free Wi-Fi inside the Lemon Pie House, and outside is a patio and a garden to hang out.

It is very difficult to sum all my emotions while writing this, because of all the grandeur and beauty of the little town of Sagada, the spirit and soul of the place live in a pie, to which, I found a mother. Where the dedication, talent and skills of Manang Katrina perfected the craft of pie making. We had a good time there, together with her daughter Bogan, who was our guide inside the cave and after a long day, the family served us their home made rice wine." read more...

"It was a slow, lengthy afternoon. Around 5pm, I think. It wasn't even twilight, yet it was getting dark already. The murky clouds above the horizon and the cold whisper in my ears, tell me to sit, just sit.

Without delay, I grabbed myself a book from the shelf, sat on the floor, leaned my elbows on the lowered tables, and started to read its cover. It wasn't really a good book, I wonder, but the dim incandescent light above my head focused on it, as if I was getting a sign from heaven. Suddenly, it started to drizzle. The gentle drops of water on the roof started to sound like a music, like a soundtrack in a movie.

As I was getting ready to get to my feet to leave, a subtle smell stopped me. It was the sweet aroma from Katrina's kitchen, of her infamous brewed coffee, and also Joseph's crispy flaky pastry called, lemon pie. So I've decided to be seated for another hour or two. I have to stay longer for that small meal."

Today, we are featuring another Photo of the Day. We found this photo recently from Mamee Presea's photo vault, also in Flickr. We even later found out that she wrote a short review on our shop.

She said and we quote, "As the name says quite plainly, they serve the best lemon pies. Ever. The tangy, lemony taste of the pastry is paired best with a cup of hot mountain brew coffee." Funny thing is, the photo posted above is not a lemon pie. It is an egg pie. Haha. :)

We really love this photo. This shows the watery sweetness and also the smoothness of our egg pie, topped with meringue and honey. The photo looks so real and so delicious, we had to rush to our pie display cabinets just to satisfy our craving. It's funny that we craved on our own product right after seeing this photo.

Today, we've decided to feature two Lemon Pie House photos.

"As a first time visitor, I read about rave reviews about a wonderful little shop tucked away in the mountains serving wonderful lemon pie. I initially wanted only a slice, but my friend was insistent in getting the whole pie and boy, I’m sure glad we got the entire pie. The custard was just right with a nice tang from the lemon that wasn’t overtly sweet and the crust was done just right, which didn’t overpower the wonderful lemony filling. Too bad I had only a day left in Sagada or else I would’ve been back for another. Perhaps on my next trip. By the way, loved the pie and the shop. Cheers." Julian Lai

This delightful photo of Manang Katrina is by far her best photo ever. Mang Joseph thought so too. This is pure nostalgia. The monochromatic effect added more quality to the picture. It makes me feel like I am just watching Manang Katrina working in their shop one day, bussing dishes on the table, waiting for the next costumers to come in. This is a something new to this blog and maybe not new to most of us. We call this "Photo of the Day." Haha. Very original and fresh, I might add. :) Anyway, so this a new Lemon Pie House feature. We will randomly select a favorite LPH photo that we see from the Internet, and we will say what we think about it, on our personal point of view.

Today, we are featuring Jonic Dao's photo. This was one of the few Lemon Pie House photos that we found in Flickr a year ago. We really liked this photo so much. It reminds us of how the Lemon Pie House used to look like. On the outside, it was rustic and kind of shabby. Now, it is all yellow and cream, bright, and lively. This will always remind us of our very humble beginning.

What I also love about this photos is that, despite the house's texture, it shows its simplicity, and at the same time, grandeur, because of its camera's angle. It made us think that we are bigger than what we are. Well, we thank all of you who tirelessly support us. We will be forever grateful.

Jonic Dao seems to be a very passionate photographer. Judging by his photo archives, he seems to like to take photos of landscapes and sometimes, people. I really enjoyed browsing his photos. You may visit his page and see for yourself.

"Hey Lemon Pie House. Me, my cousin, and a friend left Manila at 10pm, on the 8th of April 2009, to a super layo, bundok bundok, and tarik tarik road over to a very high place in the Philippines, Sagada. But it's worth the long trip.

As expected, Sagada was packed with tourists and all the inns were fully booked. We went to the SAGGAS office and they were so nice to help up find a place to stay. They were so accomodating.

Ate Lou, the owner of the house where we stayed at, also, a high school teacher in Sagada, told us about a nearby place. She said it's a place where we can taste delicious lemon pies. Mmm Yum Yum! So we stopped by this place called "The Lemon Pie House." They said lemon pies here were special, and so were their owners. I tried some and yes, it was true. It's so delicious that my cousin took home a box of it and gave some to our family and relatives in Manila. We'll surely come back to taste more of their pies, and the rest of Sagada, Mountain Province.

I will surely miss you all. The pies, the tour guides, and the places. Keep up the good work." Sherlene Royo

"Hello Lemon Pie House!

Sacada is an Ilonggo term for laborer, particularly the sugarcane plantation laborer. Well, two of us coming from Bacolod City. While the other two, although Manila-grown but having Ilonggo blood as well, I named our group as the "Sacadas of Sagada".

I have made an extensive blog for our trip, which of course, included the unforgettable Lemon Pie House.

Here is the YouTube post my daughter captured during our visit there, sipping the famous mountain tea amidst a candle-lit party atmosphere.

We've tried uploading the video testimony of my cousin several times and it took so many tries to upload it because of its length (and i had to retry after an error occurred). However, here it is.

"I've been to Sagada many times and whenever i go, new restaurants open.

My guide Perry (of SAGGAS) brought me to the Sagada Lemon Pie House one time for a breakfast. It was a nice experience indeed. As I entered the premises, I was surprised with its cozy ambiance. We sat on a lowered table like a Japanese Style motif, with pillows on the floor, where you can sit with your legs crisscrossed.

I still remember, I got a chance to try their freshly picked cutie tomatoes with dried fish on the side. I thought they're free of charge, courtesy of Perry, (hahhaha) since he requested it. Well I guess he got his priviledge as a good friend to the son of the LPH owner.

I come back to Sagada every year, not only for the place itself, but also for the locals and their food. The people are fun to be with so I've made friends with them. It's nice meeting new tourists and friends too around Sagada.

This year I came back once again with my Virtual Tourist group outdoor and invited them to the Lemon Pie House to taste the famous lemon pie. Well, I'm glad they loved it, except for the service. Haha. Ok fine. I'm going to be considerate since there were a lot of customers at the time of our visit." Queenie Ngo

"Are you in the mood for something delicious? Well this place is definitely for you. The place is homey. Very intimate.. Very personal. Everything is refreshing and lovely. The owner, Kuya Joseph and Ate Kathrina are truly remarkable and down to earth couple. They are very nice, hardworking, warm and friendly. They are Igorots and it makes me proud to be a Filipino! Hooray!

I am very happy to inform you that I really did a great job in including the Sagada Lemon Pie House in our itineraries for our first visit in the exotic Sagada last December 26-29 2008. Your place is very famous in the internet. So when I research about Sagada, there are some pictures and blogs that really caught my interest.

Let me tell you something about my new love… Kindly look at my picture, I say this with a smile from ear to ear, I have this mad dark craving for egg pie. This pie brought back memories of my childhood. This was soooo yummy! The egg pie was perfect. It was silky not spongy. It was smooth and creamy not watery and it didn’t taste like a scramble egg. It was rich and delicious. For me, it tasted like a meringue pie but not too sweet which is good. An excellent recipe, I must say.

Too bad I only had 2 photos in the Lemon Pie House because I was too anxious to dig in and besides, I was having my ‘Eureka Moment’. I never thought that an egg pie could be this delicious! My mother couldn't make pies so I never learned how to make them. But I didn’t need to be a genius to judge what a good egg pie taste like. Just one bite, and hmmm... I can actually hear "Alleluia!" Well, perhaps I exaggerated a little but it wasn't only me, everybody was hearing it too, right?

I can say it with sincerity that it was the best egg pie that I have ever eaten! Even my friend, Mariane who proclaimed that she didn't care or even liked egg pie, have changed her mind quickly after the first bite. And my family loved it too! It was so tasty and when I brought it home, I never expected it to last 24hrs.

I would highly recommend this place to everyone. I hope that other people will come and experience Sagada. Hurry up! You will miss half of your life if you don’t try it! Oh, I can’t stop raving about this place! You will never forget your first. Trust me, its fun, safe and totally unforgettable!" Ishie De Vera

Our Newly Painted House

We would like to share this photo of our newly painted Lemon Pie House. We've been deciding to do this for about a year since we did our soft launching early part of last year.

We picked a striking lemon yellow color for the exterior of the first floor, a light beige color for the second floor, and a dark alligator green color for the roof. We want people to notice our shop even when they're far away, and it seems to be working. And for those that are curious if we painted also the interior, the answer is NO. I want to give my million thanks to Mang Joseph "The Pie Man", Aling Katrina "our lovely host", Wencel who introduced us to this adorable family and the yummy pies, and of course our tour guide and new found friend Bogan (daughter of Mang Joseph and Aling Katrina) for making our stay there so comfortable and pleasant. I'm already missing the cozy seats and tables crafted by Mang Joseph himself.

I was always looking forward for a slice of pie with tea or coffee after our long walks of around sagada during our stay there. I've brought pies for my friends and family back home so they too could have a taste of Sagada's famous pies. I'm already looking forward to our next trip to Sagada. My first trip to the famous Sagada was well-worth it... and The Lemon Pie House made it possible. At times when I almost felt desperate to go at all. Amidst the rush and lack of accommodation (it was peak season, man!) I sought refuge in the Lemon Pie House (thanks Wencel for the guidance... you're the man!). A few calls I made to Manong Joseph, and the deal was sealed. The first moment I stepped in, Manang Katrina was warm and welcoming (she gave me a big hug for a welcome).

Admittedly, the "house" lacks the comforts that I have grown accustomed to at home, but the reception by the people more than made up for it (Manong Joseph and Manang Katrina, Jeff and the ever blithesome Josie Elena a.k.a Bogan - admirable family).

Here, new friendships were forged in the person of Mama and Papa (Wencel's kin) and Lea and Paolo, who are equally cool and adventure-loving (guys, balik tayo for camp!). I totally fell in love with Sagada. Four days seemed short, but I brought home 2 gigabytes of photos, 3 boxes of pies and a bundle of good memories. Thanks, The Lemon Pie House. Jojo

Where is the Lemon Pie House Located? The Lemon Pie House is located in Atey, Dao-Angan, Sagada, Mountain Province. Click here to see a map of our location.

How long have you been making pies? We started making pies in 2000, selling them in the public market and doing deliveries to nearby inns. We have fully established the Lemon Pie House during our first ever soft launching in March 21, 2008 and it has been an adventurous journey for us ever since.

Do you offer anything else aside from pies? Yes, we offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. We also serve special orders like the Vegetarian Meal and Pinikpikan. For desserts, we have carrot cake, and banana bread. Click here to see our complete online menu.

What time do you open? Our business hours is from 6am until 8pm, Mondays to Sundays.

What time would you recommend us to visit? Best time to visit the Lemon Pie House is around 5 or 6 in the afternoon, when it starts to get dark. You will get to see our new interiors with all the lights on.

Are you using real lemon fruit to your lemon pies? Yes, we are using real lemon fruit and we grow them here in Sagada.

How long do your pies usually last? Our pies would stay fresh for 3-5 days as long as you put them in the fridge or any cooler places out of direct sunlight.

What is the best way to reheat the pies? Use a regular oven or an oven toaster for reheating. Set it to high heat for 3-4 minutes. Using a microwave oven will only make the pie squashy.

How can we make reservations? We suggest that you visit us prior, to make the reservation. An amount of 50% down payment during reservation will be asked for special orders like the Pinikpikan and special meals.

Do you have other branches aside from the one in Sagada? Currently, we don't. Hopefully, we will have branches in Manila or Baguio.

Can we get assistance when visiting Sagada? Certainly, we'd be more than happy to look for a good place for you to stay in and also refer you to a trained guide when visiting Sagada.

I love your quaint little resto as much as I love Sagada. I remember vividly how I sat there with my mom at the corner table, famished from exploring Sumaguing Cave. As soon as I got a taste of your egg pie, I got hooked. Add the zing of your refreshing lemon juice, and I didn't wanna leave anymore. Especially that your place is too much of a comfort for a weary tourist. I wanted to sleep right there!

Your pies are so good that we decided to share it with my friends, even if it means bringing 3 boxes of pies and letting it sit on the lap during the 14 hours of travel! We wanted to preserve the pristine condition of the pies when we reach Manila, that's why.

I had a very refreshing conversation with the wife of the owner (sorry, I failed to get her name) on the day that we picked up the pies. She just radiates with so much goodness and enthusiasm in her heart that you can't help but feel good about everything. We bumped into her again before we left Sagada, and she greeted us like we were long-lost friends!

I am definitely going back, because I found my home in Sagada! Sharing with you the photos that I took and the thoughts that I composed while in Sagada. I am going back in May with a few friends, and Lemon Pie House is definitely in our itinerary. I will keep on going back to Sagada as long as I can travel. And I would love to live there when I can't travel anymore!

Pasyal is a weekly travel show that had featured different places here in the Philippines. Their hosts and crew had been to very nice places like Tagaytay, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Ilocos, Banaue, and Sagada.

In this episode they had shown restaurants, cafes, and other landmarks in Sagada, Mountain Province. This clip was taken from that episode and part of it was a short interview of Mang Joseph (the Lemon Pie House owner). Click here or the image above to watch the clip.

Pasyal is hosted by Ramon Bautista and Mitch Hernandez.

Mitch had worked as a TV host and also a segment producer since 2003 for Studio 23, ABC 5, and IBC 13. She is the current producer of the said show and she is producing it independently.

Ramon was a film professor at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, which later became a TV host in the MTV gag series, "The Ramon Bautista Show." He admitted himself to be shy and has low self-esteem.

We really enjoyed the Sumaguing Cave tour with Bogan and Melody, and of course, the food at the Lemon Pie House, especially the lemon pie, lemon mountain tea, the special tapey, and the tinola with itag (igorot bacon) and will surely miss them.

Imagine my daughter who is not used to walking far, did not even complain walking all the way back to the Lemon Pie House for dinner, from St. Joseph where we've stayed. All in all in just 2 days, we visited and ate at the Lemon Pie House 3 times.

It was my wife who told us to include Lemon the Pie House in our itinerary. She planned it just by looking at websites, including your blog which really caught our interest. Of course, one of my family's main vices and methods of bonding is food. That's why we loved your place because of its good food and friendly ambiance.

Zina Dee of Los Banos, Laguna wrote a very touching essay about her stay in Sagada. She called it "Three Unforgettable Women From Sagada." She wrote nice things about Ma'am Nena (Wife of the late Eduardo Masferre), an unnamed woman from Abra, and Auntie Katrina of the Lemon Pie House. She wrote:

"I met Auntie Katrina at the Lemon Pie House. She's a very friendly woman. She gave me tips to go around Sagada, about the locals. And only after minutes of meeting each other, she told me that I should bring my boyfriend the next time I go back to Sagada. Haha! Sige, Auntie. Deal. Hehe.

She shared with me the story of how Sagada got its name (it used to be called 'Ganduyan'), why the Lemon Pie House is decorated so, why the people knew how to speak English very well and so much more. Her warm smile and inviting tone zeroed in on my heart and I know that I'll always remember her."

Sagada Dap-Ayan's Remember Your Children

Due to insisting public demand, we're posting another Sagada Dap-Ayan video. This song is called "Remember Your Children." Most part of the song was written in English; later part was written in Kankana-ey, which is the Igorot native dialect.

Headed by Mr. Robert Pangod, Sagada Dap-Ayan has a bright future ahead of them. This was recorded on May 21st, 2008 at the Sagada Lemon Pie House. Photos used in this video were also taken by Wencel Angeles in various locations in Mountain Province like Kalinga, Bontoc, and Sagada. We will post more in the future so just keep on checking this blog.

"Hello po! It was really my second visit to Sagada last August (my first was back in 2005) but it was my first time to visit the Lemon Pie House. The place was really nice. Very cozy and very much inviting for guests like us.

We found the place by accident when we just passed by Manang Katrina the morning we went to Sumaguing and Lumiang caves. We saw her carrying boxes of pies on her way to the market. It was really our newly-found Australian friend who noticed how she could balance the boxes on top of her head. She told us about the lemon pie that she was selling. So we passed by the Lemon Pie House after our trip to the caves.

The pie was lovely and so we decided to bring home some to Manila. It was also my first time to try the mountain tea which was also refreshing. The egg pie was a big treat as well since it's not really the type you would find in Manila. We even went back that afternoon after we rested for some merienda. We so love the pie that on the morning of our journey going back to Manila, we forgot to ask Manong Joseph to prepare pies for us. So we bought all their pies that morning! One of my colleagues couldn't even wait to get home and ate her pie while we were still on the bus!

We really miss the pie and I miss Sagada. It's such a beautiful place to visit. The people were really nice and the food were all great! By the way, do you guys deliver here in Manila? LOL... Just a thought. I would want some for my birthday in January! We were not able to try the blueberry pie. I bet it's good as well! I will really try everything on my next visit there! With a professional help from Mr. Oly Sese, the Sagada Lemon Pie House was transformed from just a regular pie shop, into one nice cozy hangout, which later became another tourist attraction in Sagada. We here at the Lemon Pie House will hold a soft launching on Good Friday, at 5pm, on the 21st of March, 2008. Guests are invited to see some of Sagada's local performers singing songs from their albums, listen to some poetry readings, chat with other guests, sit on the floor, while eating pies, and drinking teas and coffees on our NEW small tables. We've also added some new decorations and attractions to the shop, so please come visit us.

Members of the Sagada Dap-Ayan will join us on our soft launching as they jam with our guests and sing their hearts out and play music using ethnic instruments. It should be really fun.

We're making the Lemon Pie House an alternative place to those who want to eat light and live life artistically. We hope to see you on that special day.

Our Brief History

The Sagada Lemon Pie House is owned by Joseph Daoas and Katrina Daoas. It was Joseph's mother, Elena Daoas, a native from Candon, Ilocos Sur (married to Bartolome Daoas, originally from Poblacion, Sagada) that started it all. It was her original recipe and she passed it to Joseph that later improved the recipe to make it taste even better.

It took 12 years for Joseph to perfect the recipe. He experimented to get the right amount of flour for the crust and the right texture for the filling. It was 2 years ago when the lemon pie reached its greatest improvement. But of course, it didn't end there.

The couple opened the Sagada Lemon Pie House to the public for the first time, but it wasn't a hit. So Katrina decided to bring her lemon pies to the public market, downtown Poblacion, to get better sales. Soon, more and more people buy their pies, and the rest is history.

Nowadays, you can taste some of their lemon pies in local stores and restaurants in Sagada. Just ask where the Sagada Lemon Pie House is and anyone from town can tell you where it is. They also serve fresh brewed coffees, egg pies, and even pastries. The Sagada Lemon Pie House is located in Atey, Daoangan, Sagada.
